Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Identify the appropriate coating
  • Identify coating removal task from maintenance documentation and enterprise procedures
  • Identify materials and tools to be used for coating removal from enterprise procedures and maintenance publications
  • Match aircraft or component with relevant maintenance documentation
       
Element: Prepare for coating removal
  • Identify and comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements, use material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and check personal protective equipment (PPE) for correct fit and function
  • Assemble required materials and tools for coating removal in accordance with maintenance manual
  • Prepare access to the aircraft in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
  • Determine masking requirements, including barrier materials, using enterprise procedures and maintenance publications
  • Apply required masking, including barrier materials, to relevant areas and sensitive components in accordance with requirements
  • Observe environmental requirements during the coating removal process in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • Apply chemical strippers in accordance with enterprise and chemical handling procedures
  • Remove coating using mechanical techniques in accordance with enterprise procedures and maintenance manuals
  • Clean surfaces of all chemical residue and mechanical media in accordance with enterprise procedures and maintenance manuals
  • Remove masking, including barrier materials, and clean surfaces in accordance with enterprise procedures

  • Collect and store materials that can be reused in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • Remove and dispose of or store waste materials in accordance with legislative, regulatory and enterprise procedures
  • Clean equipment in accordance with enterprise procedures or manufacturer’s instructions while observing all relevant WHS requirements, including the use of MSDS and items of PPE
  • Check equipment for serviceability and deal with unserviceable items in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • Clean and maintain tools in accordance with enterprise procedures
  • Clean work area and inspect for serviceable condition in accordance with enterprise procedures

Assessment Tasks
